Stencil Storage Ideas Every Crafter Should Try

by Mona Gandecha

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably collected more stencils than you originally planned. They’re such affordable and versatile tools. They are perfect for adding patterns, textures, and backgrounds to cards and paper crafts. But because we tend to collect so many and they are almost transparent, storing them can quickly become a challenge.

Over the years, I’ve tried a few different methods, and I’ve finally found one I love: the Simple Storage Binder and Sleeves from Taylored Expressions. They are practical, sturdy, and keep my stencils looking brand new. But I also know every crafter has a unique space and style, so today I’m sharing a variety of stencil storage ideas you might want to try for your own craft room.

My Go-To: Taylored Expressions Stencil Storage

Let’s start with my favorite, the Taylored Expressions Simple Storage Binder and Sleeves! I own the 6×6 binder and stencil sleeves because all my stencils are this size.

Simple Storage 6”x6” Binder and Simple Storage 6”x6” Stencil Sleeves

  • The binder measures 8 1/2″ x 7 1/4″ x 1 3/4″. It and can hold up 40 stencil sleeves and has two 1” metal D rings
  • The stencil sleeves come in a set of 20 and measures 7 1/4″ x 6 1/4”, with a 6 1/4″ square storage space
  • Has an elastic band attached that you can wrap around the binder to keep it closed
  • Fits into small drawers – I have two of these nicely stored in an Ikea Kallax drawer insert.

I love being able to flip through all my stencils like a photo album. The binder and inserts are sized perfectly for 6×6 stencils, and I never have to worry about bent corners or stencils sliding around.

What I love most is how easy it is to find exactly what I need. Everything is protected, organized, and easy to label by theme or brand.

Tip 1: Cut a 6×6 piece of colored cardstock so you will be able to easily see the stencil as you are flipping through the binder. I cut black cardstock for this, but you can use any favorite color!

Tip 2: Use dividers or tabs to separate categories like florals, backgrounds, and seasonal stencils. This way, flipping through your collection feels quick and intentional rather than overwhelming. Taylored Expressions also sells dividers and labels for their 6×6 Binders if you don’t want to do it yourself!

If you’re looking for a polished solution that will grow with your stencil collection, this one is hard to beat!

Taylored Expressions also sells two other sizes if you have stencil other than 6”x6”:

Simple Storage – Big Binder and Simple Storage – Perfect Pouches

  • This is the largest binder measuring 11”x13”. They can hold between 10 to 20 pouches depending on what you store in them and has three 1″ metal D rings.
  • The storage pouches come in a set of 10 and measures 10”x13”. They also have a tab closure and label holder.
  • Has an elastic band attached that you can wrap around the binder to keep it closed.
  • Perfect for larger stencils and other items
  • Binder fits inside of a Ikea Kallax

Simple Storage Mini Slim Binder and Simple Storage Mini Slim Stencil Sleeves

  • The binder measures 9 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ x 1 3/4″. It can hold up to 40 stencil sleeves and has two 1” metal D rings
  • The stencil sleeves come in a set of 20 and measures 8 1/4″ x 4 3/4″, with a 7 1/4″ x 4 3/4″ storage space
  • Has an elastic band attached that you can wrap around the binder to keep it closed

Clear Pockets in Bins

I used clear pockets (the same kind many companies sell for stamp and die storage) stored in bins before I switched to the Tailored Expressions binders and sleeves. I used Avery Elle Extra Large pockets, which measure 6-3/4″ x 9-3/8″, and trimmed them down in the height. You can line them up in a small bin, box, or drawer, and sort them however you like (alphabetically, by brand, or by design theme). You can add a dark cardstock cut to size with each stencil so you can see the stencil better and a label to the edge of each storage pocket so you can quickly identify it.

Binder with Sheet Protectors

If you like the album-style system but want a budget-friendly DIY version, a standard binder with sheet protectors works well. You can slip each stencil into a 8.5×11 sleeve and add cardstock for extra sturdiness.

Accordion Files or Hanging Folders

For crafters who prefer vertical storage, try using an accordion file or a file box with hanging folders. Place your stencils in protective sleeves, then label each folder with the stencil name, brand, or theme.

This method keeps everything compact, portable, and easy to tuck away. It’s also a great choice if you don’t have much shelf or table space.

Bonus Tip: Keep a Digital Catalog

No matter how you store your stencils, consider creating a photo catalog. Snap quick pictures of each stencil and keep them in a digital folder (or print them into a binder). This makes it easy to browse through design options without pulling out your entire stash, and it’s a huge time saver when you’re mid-project. I personally use Notion to keep track of all my stencil inventory as well as my stamp and die inventory.

Final Thoughts

Stencils are some of the most versatile tools for a paper crafter, so it only makes sense to give them a proper home. I personally love my Taylored Expressions Stencil Storage System.

The key is choosing a system that works with your space, your workflow, and your growing collection. With the right storage in place, your stencils won’t just stay organized, they will be ready to spark your creativity whenever inspiration strikes.
